[micetime]Ultraviolet light called good for the brain

  • [2018-05-23]

Researchers investigated small molecules in the neurons of mice.

In recent years, we are fully aware of the danger of ultraviolet radiation from the Sun, which is the main cause of skin cancer. However, small quantities are necessary for the normal synthesis of vitamin D and as a tonic. In a new article published in the journal Cell, scientists describe another plus ultraviolet — improvement of cognitive skills, demonstrated on mice.

Wei Xiong (Xiong Wei) and his colleagues from the University of science and technology of China explored the small molecules in the neurons of mice using mass spectrometry — and much to his surprise, he found among them rocanova acid. Still no one knew about her presence in the Central nervous system, although rocanova acid is formed in the skin. Its molecules effectively absorb UV photons, so the synthesis of rocanova acid is stimulated by solar radiation and helps to protect from its dangerous actions.

Therefore, scientists decided to test whether the ultraviolet light to increase the production of rocanova acid in the brain. Mice within a couple of hours they were irradiated by UV lamps, and then compared the content of these molecules in neurons with previous data, showing that it has actually grown.

It is known that in the cells of the liver and some other internal tissues rocanova acid is involved in the metabolism of histidine, including the transformation of the amino acids in glutamate — stimulating neurotransmitter, activating the work of neurons. And indeed, in neurons irradiated with ultraviolet light mice glutamate showed more activity glutaminergic neurons was higher. But in animals that have scientists completely blocked the work of urokinase enzyme synthesizing rocanova acid — nothing like this has happened.

On this basis, Wei Xiong and his co-authors suggested that brokered rocanova acid UV rays can stimulate the brain. The experiments confirmed that the pre-irradiated mouse demostriruet the best results in tests of memory, whereas animals with disabled urokinazoy improvements not shown. All this is not to say about the safety of UV radiation: it remains the main risk factor of skin cancer, but in small doses still need.
