Academician E Weinan, the alumnus of the former Department of Mathematics and the Dean of the School of Data Science of USTC, wins the 2019 Peter Henrici Award by Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics (SIAM) and Eidgenössische Technische Hochschule Zürich (ETH Zürich) for his breakthrough contributions in applied mathematics and scientific computing, particularly in nonlinear stochastic (partial) differential equations, computational fluid dynamics, computational chemistry, and machine learning. The awarding ceremony will be held in Valencia, Spain, from July 15 to 19, 2019.
Academician E Weinan
SIAM and ETH Zürich jointly award the Peter Henrici Prize to recognize original contributions to applied analysis and numerical analysis and/or for exposition appropriate for applied mathematics and scientific computing. The prize is awarded for broad and extended contributions to these subjects more than for a single outstanding work. The award is made every four years at the International Congress on Industrial and Applied Mathematics (ICIAM).
The selection committee for the 2019 award consists of Siddhartha Mishra, ETH Zürich (Chair); Habib Ammari (ETH Zürich); Dario Bini, University of Pisa; and Marlis Hochbruck, Karlsruhe Institute for Technology. The selection committee wishes to recognize Professor E's breakthrough contributions in various fields of applied mathematics and scientific computing, particularly in nonlinear stochastic (partial) differential equations, computational fluid dynamics, computational chemistry, and machine learning. The committee's statement continues: Weinan E's scientific work has an immense impact and has led to the resolution of many long-standing scientific problems. His signature achievements include novel mathematical and computational results in stochastic differential equations, the design of efficient algorithms to compute multiscale and multiphysics problems, particularly those arising in fluid dynamics and chemistry, and his recent pioneering work on applying deep learning techniques in scientific computing.
A Brief on Professor E Weinan
Professor E Weinan is a professor in the Department of Mathematics and Program in Applied and Computational Mathematics at Princeton University, the director of the Center for Data Science of Peking University, the dean of the Beijing Institute of Big Data Research and the dean and visiting professor of the School of Data Science of USTC. He completed his undergraduate studies in the Department of Mathematics at University of Science and Technology of China in 1982, and his master's degree in Academy of Mathematics and Systems Science at Chinese Academy of Sciences in 1985. He obtained his Ph.D. degree under the advice of Björn Engquist in the Department of Mathematics at University of California, Los Angeles in 1989. Professor E received Presidential Early Career Award in Science and Engineering in 1996, and Feng Kang Prize in Scientific Computing in 1999. He was the recipient of ICIAM Collatz Prize at the 5th International Congress of Industrial & Applied Math for his work on industrial and applied mathematics, the Ralph E. Kleinman Prize in 2009, and the Theodore von Kármán Prize in 2014. Professor E was elected as a fellow of Institute of Physics in 2005, a fellow of SIAM in 2009, a member of the Chinese Academy of Sciences in 2011 and a fellow of the American Mathematical Society in 2012.
