  • Progress on the Design of Hybrid Catalysts [2014-02-14]
XIONG Yujie's group made new progress on the design of hybrid catalysts for organic oxidation reactions, based on their previous finding on metal-oxygen charge transfer in oxygen activation (refer to: J. Am. Chem. Soc. 2013, 135, 3200). In this work, they designed semiconductor-metal hybrid structures with tunable charge density, enabling improved catalytic efficiency for organic oxidation reactions. Teamed up with Prof. Xiaojun Wu and Prof. Qun Zhang, the researchers performed the studies by i

Quantum key distribution (QKD) provides the only intrinsically unconditional secure method for communication based on the principle of quantum mechanics. Compared with fibre-based demonstrations, free-space links could provide the most appealing solution for communication over much larger distances. Despite significant efforts, all realizations to date rely on stationary sites. Experimental verifications are therefore extremely crucial for applications to a typical low Earth orbit satellite. To

QIN Liping, a professor of geochemistry at the School of Earth and Space Sciences, USTC has won the 2014 Houtermans Medal from the European Association of Geochemistry. She is the first Chinese to receive this prize. The Houtermans award recognizes a single exceptional contribution to geochemistry by a scientist no more than 35 years of age or within six years of having earned a Ph.D. The prize is named in honor of Friedrich Georg Houtermans, a Dutch-Austrian-German physicist,.
  • Birth of Quantum Maxwell's Demon: A Novel Method for Initialization of Quantum Computers [2014-01-20]
One of thOne of the largest news astounding people at the 2014 New Year is the revelation of Snowden, who released that the NSA is racing to build quantumcomputers, which could break nearly every kind of encryption. Quantum computer becomes a public hotspot overnight. Like traditional computers, quantum computes need to be initialized, that is to say to present all qubits, the calculating units, into ground-state—its lowestenergy state. But to degenerate all the qubits to ground-state is far fro
