    Purely repulsive systems such as colloids, granular materials, and foams undergo the jamming transition from unjammed state without rigidity to disordered solid state with rigidity when the packing density increases.     The research group of Prof. YANG Jinlong from Hefei National Laboratory for Physical Sciences at Microscale has made new progress in theoretical design of room temperature half-metallic ferromagnets, which makes it possible to fabricate spintronic devices working at room temperature.   • An Interesting Afternoon [2014-04-10]
    Class 3 of 2012, together with three other classes of School of Physics, held the “Chinese Chess and Gobang Game” at Mar. 28 afternoon in the Chess-poker Room of Physical Education Center, East Campus of USTC. Registration is started from Mar. 26. As offered a great opportunity for students to play with others and show their skills, this activity was favourably received and about 100 students attended.
  • Design of Hybrid Photocatalysts for Water Splitting [2014-04-09]
    Most recently, the research group led by Prof. XIONG Yujie made new progress on the design of hybrid photocatalysts for water splitting. In this work, they for the first time achieved to synergize two effects – the charge transfer driven by Schottky barrier and the intrinsic charge spatial separation in semiconductor by designing the surface facets of semiconductor in a semiconductor-metal hybrid structure, enabling significantly improved water splitting performance.   • A New 2D Carbon-based Nanostructure Discovered [2014-04-04]
    The research group of Dr. ZHAO Aidi and Prof. WANG Bing from Hefei National Laboratory for Physical Sciences at Microscale has made new progress in the systhesis of 2D carbon-based nanostructure. The results has been published on the RSC journal Nanoscale (DOI: 10.1039/C4NR00017J).
  • XUE Tian Got Young Scientists Project Funding of “Human Frontier Science Program” [2014-03-28]
    XUE Tian, a professor from School of Life Sciences in USTC and Hefei National Laboratory for Physical Sciences at the Microscale, has got the young scientists project funding announcing by Human Frontier Science Program (HFSP) on March, 20th. Also, he is the only domestic scholar supported by this program in 2014.
  • USTC Keeps First Among NPI Ranking of Chinese Universities [2014-03-27]
    The University of Science and Technology of China (USTC) has dominated the NPI (Nature Publishing Index) ranking of Chinese universities for the third consecutive years, according to the editors of the NPI 2013 Asia-Pacific published on March 27th. USTC ranks only second to the Chinese Academy of Science (CAS) among domestic institutes, 9th in Asia-Pacific area and 57th in globe top 100 (16 places higher than last year). 
  • Theoretical Breakthrough of Quantum Anomalous Hall effect in Graphene and Silicene Systems [2014-03-26]
    Prof. QIAO Zhenhua from Hefei National Laboratory for Physical Sciences at Microscale and Department of Physics and collaborators achieved new breakthroughs on quantum anomalous Hall effect in graphene and silicene systems. The results are respectively published in Phys. Rev. Lett. 112, 106802 (2014) and Phys. Rev. Lett. 112, 116404 (2014). The latter one has been selected as “Editors’ Suggestions”.
