Designing Colloidal Formulations for Drug Delivery and Drug Sequestration

      Nanoparticles can have transformative impact in medicine as vehicles for targeted and controlled drug delivery. This talk will discuss there different applications of nanoparticles in drug discovery. First we will present results to show that liposomes can be designed for sequestration of drugs that are common overdose drugs allowing the possibility of using these formulations as nanomedicine for overdose therapy. Second we will present our work on delivery of ophthalmic drugs via nanobarrier loaded contact lenses to increase bioavailability from 2 % for eye drops to 50%. We will also show how incorporation of nanostructures in the contact lenses can control the drug release. Finally we will discuss novel propofol formulations for anesthesia that are designed to reduce the pain that most patients feel when given intravenous injection. In each of the three cases both in vitro and in vivo results will be presented and there will be focus on understanding the fundamentals in addition to designing the optimal formulations.

      Anuj Chauhan is a Professor in the Department of Chemical Engineering at the University of Florida. He received his undergraduate degree from the Indian Institute of technology in Delhi, India in 1993, and received the PhD from City University of University in New York in 1998. After receiving the PhD, he worked at the University of California at Berkeley as a post-doctoral researcher till 2001, and then joined the University of Florida as an Assistant Professor in January 2001. He was promoted to Associate Professor in 2006 and full Professor in 2011. Dr. Chauhan’s research is focused on designing novel, innovative solutions to solve major healthcare problems. Chauhan’s group has published more than 110 papers and nearly 20 patants. Also his research is cited extensively by researchers (h-factor 30, >500 citations in 2016).
