Two institutes based in East China’s Anhui province: Hefei General Machinery Research Institute (HGMRI) and the University of Science and Technology of China (USTC), were given national science awards on Monday for their major achievements in scientific and technological innovation.
The exciting news was announced at an annual ceremony held in Beijing to honor distinguished scientists and research achievements.
The HGMRI won the second class of National Science and Technology Progress Award in recognition of its development and application of the technology which makes heavy pressure vessels lightweight.
Meanwhile, the USTC was honored with the second class of National Natural Science Awards for two programs: one being the fire-safety design of polymers/nano-composite materials, the other on the structure-property relation of some organic compounds.
In addition, five projects the province had taken part in were honored.
The ceremony honored 271 projects and nine scientists with national prizes.
President Xi Jinping presented China's top science award to explosives expert Wang Zeshan and virologist Hou Yunde for their outstanding contributions to the improvement of science and technology.

On May 11, the Nature Publishing Group released Nature Publishing Index 2010 China, remarking “a dramatic rise in the quality of research being published by China”. University of Science and Technology of China is ranked 3rd of TOP 10 Institutions in Index 2010 China.
