Chinese Universities' Top Ten Achievements in Science and Technology in 2009 were announced on December 23. Two research findings by USTC faculty are on the list, placing USTC on top of all other Chinese universities. The two achievements are results from the experimental study of the self-spin based quantum control, and the design and realization of dual-function single-molecule devices, respectively.
It has been a yearning of mankind to integrate quantum mechanics and computer science to realize quantum computing. Quantum control is a major challenge to the realization of this dream. In their studies, Du Jiangfeng and his team at the Hefei National Laboratory for Physical Sciences at the Microscale performed precise quantum control over nuclear self-spins and electronic self-spins by the magnetic resonance technique, and accomplished a major breakthrough in coherence research, quantum simulation and quantum computing (Nature 461, 1265 (2009)), (Physical Review Letters 103, 140501 (2009)), thereby advancing the research on practical quantum computers.
In a separate project, the single molecule physical chemical research group at the Hefei National Laboratory for Physical Sciences at the Microscale employed UHV STM to make sophisticated single-molecular operations on small molecules, transforming a single melamine molecule from an ordinary chemical to an artificial molecule that simultaneously exhibits rectifying and switching functions. Their research outcome has opened up a new channel for the development of multi-function single-molecule devices. On May 11, the Nature Publishing Group released Nature Publishing Index 2010 China, remarking “a dramatic rise in the quality of research being published by China”. University of Science and Technology of China is ranked 3rd of TOP 10 Institutions in Index 2010 China.
