USTC Wins Three Awards in 2018 National Science and Technology Award

    The Ceremony of National Science and Technology Awards was held in Beijing in the morning of Jan 8th, 2019 to honor distinguished scientific and research achievements of 2018. Party and state leaders XI Jinping, LI Keqiang, WANG Huning, HAN Zheng attended the ceremony and conferred the Awards.

    The University of Science and Technology of China (USTC) was awarded two second prizes for Natural Science Award and a second prize for Technological Invention Award as the first research unit. This is the first time for USTC to win the Technological Invention Award as the first research unit since the national incentive policy reform in 2000.

    The project of “Structure and Complexity of Dynamical System”, which was accomplished by Prof. YE Xiangdong, Prof. HHUANG Wen, and Prof. SHAO Song, was awarded the second prize of the National Natural Science Award. After more than 10 years of unremitting efforts, this project have reached a series of valuable research results, such as revealing the mechanism of largest nilpotent zero divisor in minimal system, providing a necessary condition for the Furstenberg non-crossing problem, introducing a new definition of the topological Kolmogorov system, and proving Devaney’s chaos contains Li-Yorke’s chaos.

    The project of “Theory and Method of Engine Combustion Reaction Network Control”, completed by Prof. QI Fei, Prof. LI Yuyang, Researcher YANG Bin, and Associate Prof. ZHANG Lidong, was awarded the second prize of the National Natural Science Award. The team achieves a lot in raising synchrotron radiation photoionization-molecular beam mass spectrometry combustion measurement method, revealing the dynamic mechanism of how the engine fuel molecular structure controlling the combustion reaction network, establishing the theory and method of engine combustion reaction network regulation, promoting the development of this discipline, and serving the strategic needs of the national energy and power field development.

    The project of Key “Technology and Application of Homogeneous Ion Membrane Preparation", led by XU Tongwen's  team and their cooperation research unit, was awarded the second prize of the National Technological Invention Award. The work makes a series of contributions, such as forming the homogeneous ion membrane preparation and application technology with completely independent intellectual property rights, promoting the development of the basic and applied research of ion-exchange membrane materials in China.

    The National Science and Technology Award is the highest award to reward citizens and organizations that have made outstanding contributions in scientific and technological progress. It can raise enthusiasm and creativity of scientists and technologists, speed up the development of science and technology, and improve their overall national strength in China. The National Science and Technology Awards include the National Preeminent Science and Technology Award, the National Natural Science Award, the National Technological Invention Award, the National Scientific and Technological Progress Award and the China International Science and Technology Cooperation Award. 

    In the past ten years, USTC has won 14 National Natural Science Awards as the first research unit, ranking third in C9 (China's Ivy League) universities.
