PAN Jianwei Won the ZEISS Research Award 2020

  • [2020-05-08]

Pan Jianwei, professor of University of Science and Technology of China (USTC), was awarded ZEISS Research Award 2020, for his remarkable contributions in the field of optical quantum information, especially in quantum communication and quantum computing.

As one of the leading researchers in internat ional quantum information technology, Prof. Pan Jianwei is a pioneer in quantum communications, which makes it possible to use secure and practical long-distance quantum cryptography technology. At the same time, his research on multiphoton entanglement and high-performance Bose sampling has laid an important foundation for demonstrating the advantages of quantum computing and implementing scalable optical quantum computing.

ZEISS Research Award is named after Carl Zeiss, a German optician and founder of Zeiss, for the recognition of scientists who have made outstanding achievements in the optical field internationally. Since 1990, the award has selected one scientist every two years worldwide. Four of them have won the Nobel Prize in 1992, 1996, 2000, and 2002.

The jury in 2020 comprises the following members: Jürgen Mlynek, former president of the Helmholtz Association, Andreas Tünnermann, director of the Fraunhofer Institute for Applied Optics and Precision Engineering in Jena, Stefan Hell, winner of the Nobel Prize for Chemistry in 2014, and Alain Aspect, winner of the Wolf Prize.

It has attracted extensive attention from international academic media once the award was announced. Optics.org, a subsidiary of the Society of Photo-Optical Instrumentation Engineers (SPIE), reported on the topic of "Quantum cryptography trailblazer Pan wins Zeiss Research Award".
