On the morning of September 1st, the opening ceremony for the freshmen of 2019 was held at the Eastern Conference hall of the University of Science and Technology of China (USTC). Party secretary SHU Gequn, president BAO Xinhe,heads of relevant departments, all freshmen and head teachers attended the opening ceremony. JIANG Yi, deputy party secretary of the university committee, hosted the ceremony.

At 9:30, the opening ceremony officially began. A huge banner flag lifted by the bearers moved slowly to the rostrum, and students burst out excited shouts when the flag passing over their heads. Then all the students and faculty stood up and sang the National Anthem of People's Republic of China.

President BAO Xinhe made a speech at the ceremony. On behalf of the entire faculty, he extended his warmest welcome and congratulation to every new USTCer.

President Bao gave the word "self-confidence" to all the freshmen. He hoped that they would become confident USTCers and make self-confidence the most beautiful demeanor of USTCers. He said that 2019 is the year of “Improving the Education Quality of First-class Undergraduates” of USTC. The university will sum up the concept of talent training over the past 60 years, improve the multi-field deployment and innovation, and create conditions for each student's personalized and comprehensive development. He hoped that the freshmen would create the future with self-confidence and achieve the great cause of national rejuvenation.

Professor WU Heng'an, Famous Teacher of Anhui Province and executive director of the School of Engineering Sciences, spoke as a delegation of the teachers. He combined his experience of study and work, with the theme of “remain true to our original aspiration”, wishing all the freshmen to cherish the time and make great efforts.

Professor TANG Xiaoou, a global influential scientist in the field of AI and the founder of Sense Time, spoke as an alumni representative. He recalled his experience and insights during his studies at USTC. He pointed out that team spirit was extremely important, and encouraged students to help more people with sympathy and trans-positional consideration and to make our society full of hope.

On the morning of September 7th, the opening ceremony for the 2019 postgraduates was also held at the Eastern Conference hall of USTC, the ceremony was hosted by the vice president YANG Jinlong.
After passing the USTC flag and the chorus of the National Anthem, president BAO Xinhe made a speech. He stressed that Chinese youth in the new era should take the responsibility of the times. He hopes that students in USTC will carry forward the spirit of scientists and be responsible innovators to build a powerful country in science and technology, to realize the Chinese dream of great rejuvenation of the Chinese nation, to create a better future for humankind.

President BAO Xinhe awarded the title of "Excellent Volunteer for Postgraduate Enrollment" to student volunteers. Warm applause rang from the auditorium.
Next, the delegations of elder students, and freshmen also gave some speeches in turn.
In the end, all of participants stood up and sang the university song "Eternal East Wind". The ceremony ended in the unchained melody.

After the ceremony, NI Rui, vice dean of postgraduate school, hosted the entrance education for 2019 postgraduates.

GONG Liuzhu, deputy dean of postgraduate school, introduced the basic situation of USTC. He also explained the USTC postgraduate training program and requirements from many aspects.
After entrance education, different schools will carry out a series of activities to help new USTCers familiarize with USTC.
