The 2nd Micius Forum held by University of Science and Technology of China (USTC) and Hefei City raises its curtain on April 14, 2018. The major forum invites Academician LIU Ming, BIAN Xiuwu and CHEN Xianhui to make brilliant academic reports covering three fields: “new engineering”, “new medical science”, and basic disciplines.

"Challenges and opportunities coexist." Academician of Chinese Academy of Science LIU Ming, dean of the National Institute of Microelectronics (NIM) of USTC, mentions. Integrated circuits (IC) are the core of manufacturing industry in the information age. Considering current environment and trend of the development of IC, NIM of USTC has actively planned the construction and research direction of future. To build “new engineering”, LIU looks forward to combining informatics and physics with microelectronics. Seizing the surge of high-speed development of IC industry in Hefei, LIU is planning to form a versatile platform for government, industry and research with characteristics of USTC.
"We need the capability of judging the process of tumor development and evolution automatically." says Academician BIAN Xiuwu, director of the Institute of Pathology of Third Military Medical University. Cancer has long been the enemy of human health. Just like the growth of plants, there are "seeds" (cancer stem cells) and "soil" (micro-environment) in the process of tumor generation. The two interact with each other and this interaction leads to various status of tumors and micro-environments, which is called heterogeneity. BIAN briefs on cancer stem cell and tumor heterogeneity and looks forward to the development of smart medical and "new medical science" in the future.
"Superconductivity is the first macroscopic quantum phenomenon discovered by humans." Academician CHEN Xianhui from USTC mentions. The density of carriers is a quantitative description of the conductivity of certain material. Yet conventional chemical doping methods present several downsides when being adapted to 2D material like graphene. By utilizing field-effect transistors (FET), scientists can adjust the density of carriers to achieve regulation of superconductivity and phase state. CHEN introduces the breakthroughs and innovations of his research team in this area, which shows that there are still broad prospects for basic scientific research.
The three academicians introduce their views and understandings upon the three fields: “new engineering”, “new medical science”, and basic disciplines. This forum is jointly held by USTC and Hefei City. The forum is dedicated to providing a high-level platform for outstanding young scholars who are devoted to academic research and attracting more talents to reside in Hefei and join USTC.
