Academician FAN Weicheng, founder and current director of the academic committee of the State Key Laboratory of Fire Science, won the 2020 "Outstanding Contribution Award" in Combustion from the Chinese Society of Engineering Thermophysics.
The certificate was awarded by Academician JIN Hongguang, chairman of China Society of Engineering Thermophysics, on the opening ceremony of the 2020 China National Symposium on Combustion at November 13, held in Xiamen, Fujian.
Prof. FAN was awarded the certificate
Prof. FAN, majored in Engineering Thermophysics, graduated from University of Science and Technology of China (USTC) in 1965. He served as a visiting scholar at Imperial College of technology from 1979 to 1982, and was promoted to professor of USTC in 1987. In the same year, in view of the weak situation of fire research in China, his proposal of establishing the State Key Laboratory of Fire Science was approved.
During the following more than 30 years, Prof. FAN has been committed to the research on the dynamic evolution law of fire breeding, occurrence and development, as well as the research and development (R & D) and engineering application of key fire prevention and control technologies, and served as the chief scientist of the first fire safety project of the National Program on Key Basic Research Project of China (973 Program) of the Ministry of Science and Technology.
In 1992, he founded the Asia-Oceania Association for Fire Science and Technology (AOAFST) together with Japanese and Russian scholars. He served as vice chairman, chairman and honorary chairman successively, and won the first lifetime achievement award of AOAFST and Sjölin award of International FORUM of Fire Research Directors. In 2001, he was elected Academician of Chinese Academy of Engineering.
In the 21st century, facing the major needs of national public security and the forefront of world public security science and technology, Prof. FAN founded the Hefei Institute for Public Safety Research, Tsinghua University in 2003, and then China Association for Public Safety.
Prof. FAN also participated in the formulation of Outline of the National Medium and Long Term Science and Technology Development Program, and served as the head of the expert group for the special plan for public security of the Ministry of Science and Technology, the National Key R & D Program of the “13th Five-Year Plan” and the Technology Winter Olympics.
He has won the first prize and second prize once of both National S&T Progress Awards and National Teaching Achievement Awards respectively and the National May 1st Labor Medal.
The "Outstanding Contribution Award" in Combustion of China Society of Engineering Thermophysics is a commendation for Prof. FAN's long-term contribution to the field of fire science and public safety science for China and the world.
