On October 17, the first “WANG Ganchang’s Lecture” was held at the Waterborne Lecture Hall on the East Campus.
The lecture series, initiated by School of Nuclear Science and Technology, is named after Mr. WANG, not only to commemorate the prominent scientist who has made significant contributions to China’s nuclear science, but more importantly, to introducing cutting-edge scientific researches in nuclear science to inspire USTC students in the new era to respect and devote themselves to the nuclear cause and realize their self-value.
It was hosted by LI Jiangang, dean of School of Nuclear Science and Technology. ZHAO Zhentang, academician of the Shanghai Advanced Research Institute, Chinese Academy of Sciences (SARI-CAS), LUO Qi, academician of the China National Nuclear Corporation, WANG Xiaolin, researcher of the China Academy of Engineering Physics, all delivered lectures. More than 200 teachers and students were present.
LI Jiangang welcomed the three experts in nuclear science and technology with the words: “56 years ago, on October 16, 1964, China successfully exploded its first atomic bomb. On this very day, the Lecture is of great significance to commemorate the past and to inspire all you students to lay a solid foundation and to make great contributions to our national nuclear cause.”
Lecture by academician ZHAO
ZHAO Zhentang gave a lecture on “Accelerator Light Sources—a Priority for Looking Through the Internal World of Materials” to shed light on the macro and the micro world.
Based on the major scientific difficulties facing mankind, academician ZHAO came up with the concept of particle accelerator, and introduced its development, discovery, principle and application. As the engine of scientific discovery, particle accelerator provides social services in all respects.
Based on the 14 scientific and technological challenges in the 21st century, ZHAO explained in detail the profound theories including the accelerator light sources and particularly the synchrotron radiation (SR) sources and X-ray free electron laser in simple terms, as well as its wide application in biosecurity and biological imaging.
Today, with the rapid development of accelerator light sources and the comprehensive evolution of SR sources into the fourth generation, China will also develop by strides.
Lecture by academician LUO
LUO Qi delivered a report titled “China’s Nuclear Power — Independent-innovation, Clean and Environmental, with Unlimited Power”.
Looking back at the history of China’s nuclear power, LUO explained the course of China’s first nuclear submarine, nuclear reactor, commercial nuclear power, and the 2nd generation plus nuclear power, the 3rd and 4th independent nuclear power. Today, China has transformed from a follower to a head in nuclear power development, and stands firm in the world.
Based on the global nuclear power development, LUO Qi said we can learn that nuclear power technology is the representative of a nation’s cutting-edge science and technology and industry. It is typically a dual-use technology and widely accepted by major industrial countries. Pressurized water reaction represents the mainstream of the development of the world’s nuclear power.
As the national strategic high-tech sector, nuclear power is a multi-discipline technology and a significant systematic project. Thus, China must follow the way of independent innovation and attract professionals, so as to embrace the advanced nuclear power technology.
Researcher WANG Xiaolin reported on “Current Research Progress and Challenges of the Nuclear Materials in Nuclear Projects” in a humorous way.
He recounted the progress of the corrosion and aging of nuclear materials, including those of plutonium the surface reaction and corrosion of uranium material. As an important part of the nuclear project, nuclear material plays a decisive role in the building of national defense. He believed that there would be more aspirational talents devoting to the research to make contributions to the nation and people.

Upon finishing the lectures, professor FENG Donglai gave the souvenirs to academician ZHAO Zhentang and LUO Qi, and researcher WANG Xiaolin to express sincere thanks for bringing such an academic feast for our students.
Q&A part
During the Q&A part, three experts had a warm interaction with students. They replied questions in terms of nuclear science and technology with patience, and encouraged students to learn basic knowledge well first, to bear aspirations and self-confidence, and to work hard to become the leading figures in the future.
