From January 24 to 29, the 38th International Symposium on Combustion was hosted fully online because of COVID-19. Prof. LIU Naian, director of the State Key Laboratory of Fire Science (SKLFS) of the University of Science and Technology of China (USTC), was invited as the plenary lecturer for his outstanding contribution to fire science.

Prof. LIU Naian’s Plenary Lecture at the 38th International Symposium on Combustion.
It’s worth mentioning that Prof. LIU Naian is the second Chinese plenary lecturer following Prof. QI Fei from USTC in the 90 years’ history of this top international conference on fire science. The lecture entitled “Combustion Dynamics of Large-Scale Wildfires” was published on Proceedings of the Combustion Institute.
Prof. LIU Naian has been devoted to the fundamental experimental and theoretical researches on wildland fire dynamics, decomposition and combustibility of forest fuels, and extreme fire behaviors. He has made considerable contribution to basic research of extreme fire behaviors in forest and city: over 170 research papers, active service in scientific societies like the Combustion Institute, and presiding projects supported by Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) and so on.
Honored as Olympic games in the field of fire science, the International Symposium on Combustion is the largest and most influential biennial conference in the areas of combustion science and technology. Strictly peer-reviewed conference papers are published in the Proceedings of the Combustion Institute whose acceptance rate is about 30%.
The number of research papers by Chinese scholars published at the International Symposium on Combustion has been increasing since 2000, indicating great progress China has made in fire science research. According to ISI-Web of Science, USTC has published 97 papers in the Proceedings of the Combustion Institute from 2011 to 2020, ranking first among world’s universities.

A total of 13 colloquium categories were addressed at the 38th International Symposium on Combustion including gas-phase reaction kinetics, diagnostics, laminar flames and so on. 5 Plenary Lectures, 4 Topical Reviews and 4 industry presentations were delivered by invited speakers. Apart from Prof. LIU Naian, Prof. YANG Bin, USTC alumnus and now in Tsinghua University was invited to this symposium to present a Topical Review.
