On May 26, 2021, Research Fellow HAO Jihua of University of Science and Technology of China (USTC) was awarded the CIFAR Azrieli Global Scholar Award for 2021 by Canadian Institute for Advanced Research (CIFAR). This is the first time that this award is given to a scholar from mainland China university. A total of 17 young scholars from around the world received the award this year, including three in the field of earth and planetary sciences.

HAO Jihua is currently a Research Fellow in School of Earth and Space Sciences of USTC. He finished his undergraduate study in USTC in 2012 and received his doctoral degree from Johns Hopkins University in 2016. After graduating, he conducted postdoctoral researches at the University of Lyon, France, and Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey, USA respectively. He returned to work in China in January 2021 and was funded by the Pioneering Youth Program of Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS). He is mainly engaged in research on early Earth nutrient cycling, origin of life, and habitability of extraterrestrial oceans, etc.
The Canadian Institute for Advanced Research (CIFAR), founded in 1982, is an independent research institute that attracts and funds outstanding researchers from around the world through collaborative research projects in social, scientific, and technological fields, in order to stimulate their ideas and solve important world problems. The Institute currently has nearly 400 researchers from 130 institutions in more than 17 countries. Since its inception, 18 Nobel laureates have participated in the Institute.
The CIFAR Azrieli Global Scholars Award provides C$100,000 (non-specific project) to young researchers who is at their critical academic stage. Besides, these researchers are offered a two-year appointment to a CIFAR research program. It also provides leadership and communication training to help young researchers to build their scientific research networks and stimulate scientific innovation. Approximately 6% of global applicants can be admitted.
