Congratulations to the winners in the second ‘Jiuzhang’ Mathematics Contest in University of Science and Technology of China (USTC). The medals not only prove their mathematical skills, but also motive them to follow the spirt of The Nine Chapters on the Mathematical Art, an advanced and sophisticated mathematical literary work from ancient China, after whose Chinese name this contest is named. By offering such an opportunity for students to show their skills in math, this contest aims to discover talented students in mathematics.

SHENG Mao, the Secretary of the Party Branch and one of the fundamental mathematics teachers from the School of Mathematical Sciences took the lead. Along with other branch members made this contest happen together in 2022. The second ‘Jiuzhang’ Mathematics Contest is composed of two branches: the Basic branch, and the Professional branch. The former corresponds to the National University Mathematics Competition, which comprehensively examines students' applied ability in mathematical analysis and linear algebra, while the latter corresponds to the "S. –T. Yau College Students Mathematics Contest", which examines students' skills in five aspects: algebra and number theory, analysis and equations, geometry and topology, probability and statistics, and computation and application.

The timeline of this contest started with the “kick-off” meeting on January 18th, 2022, when the professional faculties in the department gathered to arrange this activity. After effective and logical preparation, this event was held successfully as scheduled from March 12th to 13th. A total of 301 students from 14 departments signed up for the competition, which dramatically increased by 35% compared to last year.
After the competitive and rigorous contest schedule, the awarding ceremony was held on April 6th. ZUO Junjiang (alumni of the Class 9810), the Deputy Director of Huawei Shanghai Research Institute and Director of the University System Department of Huawei made his speech online. He thought high of this contest and delivered the intendancy of Huawei seeking cooperation with universities in mathematics.
SHENG Mao made the closing speech by summarizing the experiences and deficiencies of this Contest. He also clarified the continuing tasks to amplify this competition's influence among students, so as to contribute to the development of mathematical science in campus.
It’s not the end but rather a start, a start for all the participants to learn more, discover more, and dedicate more, to writing a better future for their own also for the greater vision of the nation.
