In the morning of September 3rd, President Bao Xinhe of University of Science and Technology (USTC), gave the first lecture of the "Science and Society" seminar for the class of 2022 undergraduate students of USTC at the East Auditorium. ZENG Changgan, Director of Academic Affairs, hosted the ceremony.

President BAO Xinhe began with a warm welcome to the new students of the Class of 2022. He gave a comprehensive introduction to our university from the aspects of "our new students", "our university" and "our alumni", including enrollment, school history and mode, talent cultivation, scientific innovation and so on.

President BAO pointed out that in the context of the world undergoing unprecedented changes of the century, technological and industrial revolutions have become increasingly important in accelerating social development. Though China has gained world-renowned achievements in strategic high-tech and major science infrastructures, yet in some areas of basic research such as chips and aero engines, we still lag behind developed countries.
President Bao went on to stress our school’s long-held education concept of focusing on the comprehensive development of students. Our university has been implementing diversified talent cultivation to continuously promote the growth of students’ creativity. At the same time, the university pay great attention to interdisciplinary development, such as integrated development of new medical science and new engineering, striving to establish USTC as a world-class university with Chinese characteristics.

At the end of his speech, President BAO expressed earnest expectation for the freshmen. He encouraged students to shoulder the responsibility of their generation, keep in mind the goal of the great rejuvenation of the Chinese nation and grow to be competent young men and women with promising future.
During the interactive session, President BAO Xinhe carefully answered the questions raised by the students about the construction of the academy, personal development, and encouraged the students to remember and pass down the original mission and spirit of USTCers.
After the presentation, assistant principal DENG Jiansong presented a plaque to President BAO Xinhe to commemorate the presentation of the "Science and Society" seminar.
