On October 29th, the 2nd Science and Technology Communication Summit of the University of Science and Technology (USTC) was successfully held online by Institute of Science Communication of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) and the School of Humanities and Social Sciences of USTC. The theme of this year was “think big, aim high and spread wide” with an intention to enhance academic exchanges in science and technology communication.

On the opening ceremony, SHU Gequn, secretary of the party committee of USTC, CUI Baoguo, vice chairman of Chinese Society for Science and Technology Journalism, TANG Shukun, dean of Science Communication Research Center of CAS, and SHI Yunli, executive dean of the School of Humanities and Social Sciences of USTC, respectively addressed the summit.
The following report session was started by Prof. GUO Chuanjie, who discussed three basic questions on science education, contending that it should be combined with humanistic education.

Then, CAO Zexian, researcher from Institute of Physics of CAS made a statement on physics, technology and craftsmanship of Netherlands, explaining why Netherlands is the only country making lithography machine. He concluded: “Magic is no magic”, encouraging us to take Netherlands as a role model.

The next report was given by Prof. JIA Hepeng from School of Communication of Soochow University. He provided the latest trends in international science communication and their inspirations for developing Chinese knowledge system, demonstrating the disparity between Chinese society features and the western context that generated the classic theory of science communication.

The last two representations were given by two alumni, ZHANG Mingwei and MOU Yi. The former proposed a new trend of the press, visualization of the paper. The latter, together with Prof. LI Benqian, shared the international experience and Chinese characteristics of science communication.

It was followed by Q & A between the audience and the reporters.
Science and Technology Communication and Science Education Sub-forum of Young Scholars was held during 2pm to 6pm. The participants were young scholars from various colleges, including Communication University of China, Beijing Normal University, Beijing Foreign Studies University, and so on. After young scholars respectively made 10-min representations on their own thesis, experts and professors gave comments and discussed with them. It is acclaimed by participants as a thought-provoking and inspirational activity.

Science and Technology Communication Faculty was founded in 2001. Since its founding, many distinctive majors have been developed, cultivating comprehensive talents in journalism and communication. Firstly held in 2021, this summit has widely attracted attention from colleges, institutions and scholars. The 2022 summit further facilitated academic exchanges and cooperation between USTC and other universities and institutions, providing more innovative thoughts and making contributions to the development of science and technology communication in China.
