On September 20^th ,the 2023 opening ceremony and 65^th anniversary commemoration of the University of Science and Technology of China (USTC) was held at the stadium of USTC, with academician representatives from the Chinese Academy of Sciences, alumni representatives, leaders of USTC and Anhui provincial government, undergraduate and postgraduate student of the class of 2023 present. SHU Gequn, Secretary of the Party Committee of USTC, presided over the ceremony.

With the rhythm of the school anthem, Eternal East Wind, the ceremony commenced at 10:30 a.m. Applause burst out when the school flag skimmed over the auditorium towards the rostrum. Then, all attendees stood up and sang the national anthem.

HAN Jun, secretary of the provincial party committee of Anhui, delivered an inspiring speech, expressing congratulations to all the teachers, students, staff and alumni of USTC on behalf of Anhui provincial government and a warm welcome to the newly-enrolled students. In his speech, after reviewing the shared history and achievements made by the joint effort of USTC and Anhui Province, Secretary HAN Jun then expressed Anhui’s firm support and great expectations for USTC, scheming a bright future for the industrial development and high-end talent supplies of USTC.

Afterwards, Academician BAO Xinhe, President of USTC, addressed gratitude to the long-term support and concern from CAS, Ministry of Education and Anhui Province. He uttered high respect and gratitude to the current and former faculty of USTC who contribute greatly to the development of USTC. He encouraged all USTCers to stick to the school’s motto of “be patriotic and professional while integrating theory with practice”, making advancements in scientific frontiers and contributing to our country in the new era.

Academician WANG Zhizhen spoke on behalf of the alumni. She reviewed the history of USTC, stressing the tradition of patriotism and innovation that long prevails in our university and expressing the love for our school and for science in every USTCer’s heart.

As faculty representative, Prof. WANG Yuming, executive dean of the School of Earth and Space Science shared his experience in college years. His words on the uncertainty of the outside world and the definiteness of our purposes provoked deep thought in every audience’s mind.

KOU Xin from the School of Computer Science and Technology, XING Yihang from the School of the Gifted Young and Du Ying from school of Chemistry and Materials Science addressed respectively on behalf of freshmen and postgraduate students. They expressed their strong determination to explore the unknown and encouraged their fellow students to never give up when facing obstacles.

The ceremony finally took a curtain call with the audience singing the school anthem together.
