Prof. HUANG Weixin from USTC won the 7th China Catalytic Youth Award offered by the Catalysis Committee of the Chinese Chemical Society (CCS) at the 19th National Catalysis Academic Conference on the basis of innovative ideas and systematic progress in the research of catalytic surface chemistry model system. The award aims to encouraging young Chinese catalytic scientists under the age of 45 who have made creative achievements in the research and development of catalytic science and application. Once every two years, CCS would generally choose no more than two people at a time to give the award.

Fundamental understandings of surface chemistry and catalysis of solid catalysts are of great importance for the developments of efficient catalysts and corresponding catalytic processes, but have been remaining as a challenge due to the complex nature of heterogeneous catalysis.
Prof. HUANG independently proposed the research idea of “Single to Nano crystals-based model catalysts" to carry out the basic research of heterogeneous catalysis, and achieved systematic research results. Recently, he was invited to publish a review named Surface Chemistry and Catalysis of Oxide Model Catalysts from Single Crystals to Nanocrystals on the journal of Surface Science Reports(surface science reports 74 (2019) 100471), after he published it on the Account of Chemical Research (account. Chem. Res. 49 (2016) 520-527) and Chemical Society Reviews (chem. SOC. Rev. 46 (2017) 1977-2000).
In the review, Prof. HUANG reviewed the challenges and strategies of the basic research of heterogeneous catalysis, elaborated the research idea of “Single to Nano crystals-based model catalysts. He also reviewed the progress of model catalytic system from single to Nano crystal based on CeO2, TiO2, and Cu2O catalyst system, and looked forward to the development of the research direction and the contribution to the basic research of heterogeneous catalysis.
The research was supported by the National Major Scientific Research Program of the Ministry of Science and Technology, the National Natural Science Foundation of China, the Chinese Academy of Sciences and the Yangtze River Distinguished Professor Program of the Ministry of Education.
