The award ceremony of “The Popular Science of China 2018” was held on Jan 16th in the office of the People’s Daily Press, co-orgnaized by the China Association for Science and Technology and People’s Daily Press. Popular Science Star 2018 were announced at the ceremony together with Popular Science Self-Media and etc. YUAN Lanfeng, an associate researcher of National Research Center for Microscale Material Science as well as a famous online popular science sower, was in the shining list.

YUAN Lanfeng began to popularize quantum information in the Sina Weibo with the id “HU Bugui from USTC” in 2015. His work has received lots of attention and won a good reputation. The number of his fans reaches close 2 million. In 2018, he updated the form of the multimedia popular science and cooperated with a video studio to launch serial programs called “Yuan Technology”, which has been vistied online for more than 10 billion times.
In 2016, nine of the world’s famous institutions cooperated to conduct the Big Bell Test, call for a large number of volunteers worldwide to participate in the random number output games. USTC News Center , as the Chinese outreach branch, took on the recuiment task and built the Chinese Big Bell website. Through new media channels, Dr. YUAN wrote a vivid and interesting Wechat article and attracted many. He also served as the host and science commentator in a global video broadcast China Station. His commentary inspired hundreds of thousands of people to learn the basic theory of quantum physics and take part in the game online, helping the experiment to collect enough random data. Finally, the experimental results were reported in Nature.
The selection of the Popular Science Communicators of China in 2018 is held nationwide and has strict requirements for candidates. Those who are selected must be positive on popular science and creative in the form when spreading knowledge. Meantime, the content they disseminate must be both authoritative and easy to understand. Those who can be selected are important figures with national influence in a certain field of scientific communication.
YUAN Lanfeng was admitted into the college of chemical physics of USTC in 1992, at the age of 14. In 2001, he received his Ph.D. in chemistry from USTC. His doctoral paper was quickly selected as one of the 100 great doctoral papers in 2004. He entered Cornell University and Princeton University for postdoctoral research in 2001 and 2004 respectively. In 2006, he returned to USTC as an associate researcher.
