The 2018 China Dali World Famous University Dragon Boat Invitation Race is held on June 9th and June 10th at Dali, Shanxi. The dragon boat team of University of Science and Technology of China(USTC) takes the first place in events of men’s 500 and 200 meters straight race and the third place in men’s 2000 meters buoy race.
The race kicks off with the event of 500 meters straight race on the morning of June 9th. The USTC team finishes the preliminary as the top of its group and comes second in the semifinal. In the final match, the USTC team stays highly alert and holds a lead of one boat’s distance after setting off. With strong willpower and relentless tempo, the USTC team maintains its advantage throughout the race track and wins the gold medal with a time of 2’31”55.

As the champion of the first battle, the USTC team enters the event of 200 meters straight race confidently and spiritedly in the afternoon. Showing speed and passion, the USTC team comes first in both the preliminary and semifinal of group stage. Competitors in the final are the Tianjin University(TJU) team, the Nankai University(NKU) team and the Gdańsk University of Technology(GUT) team. By virtue of tough training of star-up skills, the USTC team establishes a leading edge after thirty paddles or so. The TJU team and the NKU team are in hot pursuit and gradually shorten the distance. The USTC team holds on persistently and finally hit the finish line first with a time of 1’00”73. The TJU team takes the second place with a time of 1’01”20 and the NKU team the third place with 1’01”65.

The event of 2000 meters buoy race is in play on the next day, which is the most intense competition of all events. As the champion of 500 meters straight race, the USTC team sets off first, followed by the GUT team. Under accurate operation of the steersman, dragon boat of USTC successfully bypass the first buoy in the bend. Exiting the bend, entering the straight and accelerating, the USTC team made every move tactically and steadily. After 1000 meters’ paddling, team members slow down a little bit due to body fatigue. With 500 meters to go, the USTC team steps up again and makes the final dash. Finally, the USTC team wins the third place with a time of 11’41”85. The TJU team takes the first place with a time of 11’36”21 and the NKU team the second place with 11’37”87.

The USTC team is led by teacher ZENG Wen and coach SI Youzhi. The race is sponsored by International College Students Dragon Boat Federation, Shanxi Province Sports Bureau and the Weinan Municipal People's Government and is organized by Shanxi Province Sports Administration Center and Weinan City Sports Bureau. Twenty two teams in total participate the race, including teams from UC Berkeley, University of Southern California, University of Waterloo, Gdańsk University of Technology, University of Sydney, Tsinghua University, Peking University, Fudan University, University of Science and Technology of China, Wuhan University, Huazhong University of Science and Technology, Zhongshan University and so on. The race consists of men’s,women’s and mixed 200 meters straight race, 500 meters straight race and 2000 meters buoy race. The dragon boat team of USTC participates in men’s races and is supported by Xinchuang Alumni Foundation.
