Dr. Dirk Smit, Global Vice President of Dutch energy and petrochemical company Shell and Prof. Dr. Derek Elsworth, member of the American Academy of Engineering, paid visit to the university from May 23th to 24th. Dr. Dirk Smit expressed their intention of cooperation on energy issues with the university, and Prof. Dr. Derek Elsworth delivered a scientific report on oil reservoir monitoring at the Hefei Master Forum.

Dr. Dirk Smit talked about Shell's business development at the reception. Apart from oil business, Shell is also engaged in frontier research on clean energy and emissions issues in collaboration with many top universities, according to the president. Commercial and academic communities merge in the trends of globalization, he said, who announced that he is looking forward to in-depth cooperation with the university.

The Shell delegation and Prof. Dr. Derek Elsworth also organized a number of academic activities with the geophysics major of the school. On 24th afternoon, Dr. Dirk Smit gave an academic report entitled Towards Continuous Reservoir Monitoring with Ambient Noise, which introduced the application of background noise imaging in reservoir monitoring. Prof. Dr. Derek Elsworth, being an expert in rock mechanics and shale gas energy development, made a presentation entitled Induced Seismicity and Permeability Evolution shale gas, CO2 Storage and Deep Geothermal Energy. The report focused on permeability and lithology in shale gas, carbon dioxide storage and geothermal mining. Experiments and measurements showed that the permeability and friction are related to sliding speed and rock materials.

On 25th morning, the Shell delegation and students held a report on the topic of Digitalization Technology Transformation in the conference room of the School of Earth and Space Sciences. Teachers and students from geophysics, mechanics and modern physics majors discussed about applications of respective fields in exploration seismology with guest experts.

The Shell delegation also included Dr. JING Xudong, General Manager of Shell Global Solutions International Company and Dr. DENG Qun, CEO of Shell Innovation Factory. The reception was attended by Principal BAO Xinhe and Prof. ZHANG Jie, member of the Thousand Talents Program, and representatives of the Office of International Cooperation, School of Earth and Space Sciences, and professors of School of Engineering Science, School of Information Science and Technology.
