Come and discuss with guests and USTC reporters in the lectures on scientific news writing, and brainstorms here will reshape your frame of mind and bring you true maturity.
On December 9th, ZHU Lixin, Chief Reporter of China Daily Anhui Bureau, was invited to give a lecture on scientific news writing to reporters from University of Science and Technology of China (USTC) News Center, helping the self-improvement of young reporters at school to a large degree. ZHU Lixin’s report covered a wide range of aspects, from detecting interesting campus news, to portraying attractive figures that have special experiences and convey true values; from organizing news language that outreaches the scientific audience to the mundane world, to conducting interviews with both skill and art. Furthermore, as ZHU mentions, campus reporters should also stay informed of the hot issues in the society and combine them with school life by means of new media, say, microblogs or WeChat public numbers. In a word, for reporters at school, acute senses of interesting news and numerous practice are necessary.
Another part of the lecture was hosted by WANG Juan, an experienced editor and reporter at USTC News Center. To throw light upon how a decent report comes into being, she placed the young in brainstorms that help them think as real and proficient English reporters. What makes a brief and eye-catching title? How to arrange a luring opening so that the readers stay and go further with the author? How to tag relevant and appropriate pictures? And so on. Following her tips, participating reporters switched roles between writers and readers and thought out of box, proposing refined versions of a piece of news that make a report better little by little.
Without doubt the lectures are of great value to USTC reporters about their ways of thinking and writing, especially the green hands that aim to dive deeper into the world of science and news. Of course, these ambitious young are recognized and encouraged and received their certificates as formal members of USTC News Center. So hold tight your keys and pave your way, for you a vibrant dimension of news is yet to explore.
