USTC Holds 2nd Design Thinking and Innovation Practice Seminar

    "Design Innovation", a public optional course for undergraduate, wrapped up with a final exhibition fair along with the 2nd Design Thinking and Innovation Practice Seminar on May 22. The course, which is opened by School of Information Science and Technology since 2011, is originated from a course called ME310 at Stanford University, thus it established a deep, cooperative relationship with Stanford SUGAR Network, a global design union including colleges and institutions, and learnt an effective way to train students on their thinking, innovating, mining ability, expression, time management, and teamwork etc.

    In the morning, there were five teams showing their design projects.

    iRollator, an intellectual walking aid for elder people. It helps the elderly with outdoor movements and is able to check the surrounding environments, giving effective feedbacks and actions. This project gained support from IBM Chinese Research Center.

    WellCare is an intellectual caring product for Alzheimer’s patients. It includes two parts called health beads and intellectual caring pillow. This project was jointly designed by students from USTC and China Academy of Art.

    everfoto is an assistant for visiting history museums. It provides links between tourists and exhibits on display, and utilize a technology called AR (Augmented Reality) to help enhance fun during the visiting.

    CULTURE is an immersion system that could provide an immersive experience for the users. It is a product that faces multi-functional applications in the future.

    MediMind is a new mode of branding and marketing pharmaceuticals with the help of Internet. This project was jointly designed by students from USTC, China Academy of Art, University of St. Gallen, and University of Liechtenstein, under the guidance of Boehringer Ingelheim, a world renowned pharmaceutical manufacturer.

    In the afternoon, the Seminar invited four guests to give four interesting talks. The invited speakers were Mr. CHEN Quqing, Vice President of China Cultural Industrial Investment Fund, Dr. GU Jiawei, R&D Director Architect of Baidu Research Institute, Prof. ZHOU Bo from China Academy of Art, and Mr. ZHONG Kun from iFlytek.

    The activities were hosted and supported by USTC Information and Computer Experiment Teaching Center.
