Prof. YANG Peidong, from Chemistry Department of University of California, Berkeley (UCB), also the 8812 alumnus of University of Science and Technology of China (USTC), was elected Fellow of the American Academy of Sciences (AAS) on local time of May 3rd. According to the announcement on the AAS website, a total of 84 well-known scholars became new members and 21 foreign associates from 14 countries and regions was elected as foreign members of the academy.
YANG Peidong, admitted into the Applied Chemistry Department of USTC from the Mudu high school of Suzhou in 1999, was awarded the highest honor of undergraduates-the GUO Moruo Scholarship. He started to do further research in Harvard University on his major in 1999 and got the Chemistry PHD degree in 1997. From then on, he served as assistant professor, associated professor and full professor in UCB. In 2011, he was chosen in named “the world’s top 100 chemists” list by Thomson Reuters, ranking No. 10 and got the number 1 of the “top 100 materials scientists” list. He was elected Fellow of American Academy of Arts and Sciences on April 18, 2012. Shanghai University of Science and Technology announced him as the Dean of School of Physical Science and Technology on April 28, 2014. YANG also won the 2014 annual Ernest Orlando Lawrence Award and the 2015 annual MacArthur Genius Award.
According to the data of the Alumni Association of USTC, the alumni LUO Liqun (8100)、ZHUANG Xiaowei (8700) and YANG Peidong (8812) was Fellow of American Academy of Sciences and American Academy of Arts and Sciences. What’s more, ZHOU Yu (752) and LI Kai (77 postgraduate) was Fellow of American Academy of Engineering.
