On June 26th, HE Yiwu Chair Professorship Awarding Ceremony and academic report meeting was held at the international conference hall. On behalf of USTC, Deputy Secretary Prof. JIANG Yi awarded the appointment letter to Mr.HE Yiwu. HE becomes the first chair professor in Public Administration in USTC.
HE Yiwu is alumnus of USTC. He is Deputy Director of Bill & Melinda Gates foundation and is responsible for strategic planning, grant making, supervising and managing in global health programs in the Gates Foundation. He has represented the Gates Foundation to participate in three Summer Davos Forum. He develops collaborations with WHO, Song Ching Ling foundation, and a number of internationally renowned research institutions and scientists including Nobel laureates.
After the grand and simple awarding ceremony, HE delivered a speech entitled "Innovations in Public Affairs & Intellectual Properties with Global Impacts”. Dean of School of Public Affairs, Prof. SONG Wei presided over the meeting.
From the perspective of international project management,HE set forth the importance of creative thinking. He explained the concept of innovation, the necessary conditions for innovation, and its influencing factors. Taking international anti-smoking program as an example, he discussed the innovative decision-making process of public affairs. Furthermore, he expounded how to achieve more effective results through applying innovation management in the field of public affairs. Finally, he talked about the innovative applications of intellectual property. Using Google, Microsoft and other multinational companies’ patent strategies as examples, he discussed how “smart companies” use intellectual property rules to gain profit creatively.
After the lecture, faculty and students interacted with Mr. HE actively. They exchanged opinions on intellectual property protection, technology transfer in China and the United States, students' innovative ability training and so on. The wonderful questions and answers got applause from time to time and deepened teachers and students’ understanding of innovation management and intellectual property application.
An academic seminar was organized for Mr. He Yiwu, faculty, postdoctoral and doctoral students of School of Public Affairs. They exchanged ideas on discipline construction, talent introduction and personnel training, international cooperation and so on. HE said, as a professor of USTC, he will make his own contribution on discipline construction, overseas high-level talents introduction and education internationalization of School of Public Affairs.
