At the invitation of Prof. LI Weiping, Dean of School of Information Science and Technology, Dr. Nicholas Mastronarde, Assistant Professor of University at Buffalo (UB), the State University of New York, paid a three-day visit to USTC during October 28 and 30.
In the morning of Oct 28, Dr. Mastronarde visited the USTC History Museum and got a preliminary understanding of USTC’s development. In the afternoon, he came to west campus and visited Information Processing Centre (IPC), which is recently moved into Science & Technology Building. There he had an informal discussion with the IPC faculty and students and learnt about their research progress as well as achievements. After that, Dr. Mastronarde gave a talk with the title "UB Multimedia Communications and Systems Lab: Some Present and Past Research", in which he introduced roughly the research findings his team had achieved in multimedia communications and systems. The lucid talk won warm applause from the audiences present.
Dr. Mastronarde came to Institution of Advanced Technology (IAT), USTC on Oct 29. There he discussed with USTC faculties about some issues in cooperation projects with Intel Corp. Later, in the company of Prof. LI Weiping and some other IAT leaders, Dr. Mastronarde visited the newly completed IAT park with interest. He was greatly amazed at the fast speed and high quality of the IAT construction work.
In the morning of Oct 30, Dr. Mastronarde gave USTC graduate students a lecture on ”Introduction to Game Theory with Applications to Resource Allocation” at west campus. Game theory was completely new to most of the students, thus the lecture, though short and concise, gave the students great benefits and enlightenments.
During his stay in USTC, Hefei, the modern cityscape and vibrant campus gave Dr. Mastronarde very deep impressions. Hopefully in the near future, USTC and UB will deepen the cooperation on academic exchange and promote the development in multimedia area together.
