“I think the most important characteristics in me are determination and independence, which provide me with a high degree of freedom to strive towards my goals,” says XIAN QiQi, one of the recipients of the “GUO MoRuo Scholarship” this year. This scholarship is the highest honor for students at the University of Science and Technology of China (USTC).
XIAN entered USTC through the Gifted Young Program when she was 16 and is now among the top students in the Yan Jici Talent Program in Physics. She majors in Applied Physics and minors in Computer Science. Beyond her studies, she also enjoys art and served as the Vice Chairman of the School Choir. “I wasn't completely sure I could be awarded the highest honor at USTC back then. I am deeply grateful to the school and everyone for recognizing my efforts over the years,” reflects XIAN.

I Want to Help People Through My Research
XIAN has been passionate about Math since childhood. In high school, she participated in the Math Olympics, learning much beyond the textbook. “My ability to quickly grasp new and difficult concepts has significantly improved by participating in contests,” explains XIAN. This ability helps her study efficiently in university, allowing her time to pursue research goals.
"I want to do research that can genuinely help people. That’s my ultimate goal, and it’s very meaningful to me." To achieve this, XIAN has aspired to conduct interdisciplinary research. "These types of research are usually cutting-edge and promising, and that excites me," she says.
Over the years, XIAN has focused on the combination of Physics and Biology. She is particularly interested in computational neuroscience and its applications in clinical trials to benefit patients with neural disorders. “I want to conduct research that has practical applications,” says XIAN. To acquire the necessary knowledge and gain research experience, she has participated in several research programs, both online and offline, in Taiwan and America.
XIAN’s research involves extensive work in modeling and computation, driving her to minor in Computer Science. “Just be clear about what you need to achieve your goal, and go for it,” she advises.

Finding What Means the Most to Me and Communicating with the Experienced
To her teachers and classmates, XIAN has always been a determined and independent individual. She knows exactly what she wants and takes action to achieve her goals. When asked how she developed this capability, she emphasizes two important steps: “Step one is to find what truly matters to you, no matter how vague or big it is. And then, communicate with experienced individuals to gain prior knowledge to make informed decisions.”
For XIAN, helping people is her driving force, leading her to combine Physics and Biology in her research. “Some might consider unraveling the mysteries of the universe as the most meaningful pursuit, so they choose theoretical physics. It’s all up to you,” says XIAN. Guided by her overarching goal, XIAN seeks advice from senior students and professors about specific research fields and suitable laboratories. “I have talked to about seven or eight professors. They are all very friendly, and their advice is very practical and insightful,” says XIAN.
Regarding her independence, XIAN explains that she was raised in a relatively relaxed environment. “My parents allow me to explore my interests by myself and support my decisions. They also steer me back on track when necessary.” This freedom has allowed her to make her own decisions, and when results turn out well, her sense of achievement increases, creating a virtuous cycle of self-belief.

Being Responsible for Myself and Staying Positive
While balancing two degrees and conducting research, XIAN also holds a position in the School Choir. She shares her secret to effective time management: being responsible for herself and being aware of her available time and efficiency. “I understand that everything I do is to achieve my goals, For example, when I have to study for relatively less important lessons, I don’t slack off but study with high efficiency. I have to be responsible for myself.”
XIAN emphasizes the importance of prioritizing tasks when necessary. Studying and social activities each have their own important roles, with studying focusing on learning and growth, while social activities and hobbies provide relaxation and stress relief “I hang out with my friends frequently. When I feel stressed, I talk to them to seek advice and emotional support. I’d say I am extroverted and friends are important to me,” she says with a smile.
XIAN sees herself as an optimistic person who adjusts her thoughts and feelings to eliminate stress early on. “But sometimes I do feel lonely and become gloomy.” She recalls her experience applying for PhD programs while in Chicago for over five months. “There were numerous interviews, and the winter in Chicago is so cold that I felt very lonely.” Fortunately, her friends were there for her. “Although they communicated with me online, their warm comfort and encouragement helped me get through the tough times,” says XIAN.
I Want to Pursue a Research Position in the Future
“No matter if I work in academia or industry in the future, I hope to continue doing research.” XIAN summarizes her future aspirations in this way. She is determined to pursue a PhD in the US. “I enjoy doing research and hope to put the findings into practical use if possible. I will try my best to realize my dream and eventually help people to make the world a better place.”
