The 14th Beijing International Film Festival, hosted by China Media Group and The People's Government of Beijing Municipality, was held in Beijing on April 24th. The 6th "Spirit of the Elderly Scientists" micro film "The Mathematician of the People" created by the University of Science and Technology of China (USTC), Xinhua Net and Xinhua News Agency Anhui won the first prize in the entertainment works.

With the theme of "Life in Short Video", the short video unit received 5,185 works from more than 30 countries, including China, the United States, France, Australia, Iran and Thailand. After initial review, reexamination, and final evaluation, 15 first-class creative works were selected, covering five categories: news, life, knowledge, entertainment, creativity, etc. Prof. ZHU Jiping, from the Publicity Office of USTC, received the award on behalf of the team and delivered a speech.

The Mathematician of the People tells the story of HUA Luogeng. As the then vice president of USTC, HUA has been dedicated to teaching and conducting research for a long time. He pioneered the "one-stop teaching method", which played an important role in cultivating the talents of mathematics. His fighting spirit of "intelligence lies in diligence, genius lies in accumulation" and the patriotic philosophy of "serving the people not for the sake of the individual" inspired generations of scientists to serve the country through science and education.

Just as ZHU noted in his speech, The Mathematician of the People was the sixth microfilm of the series since the 70th anniversary of the founding of the People's Republic of China. It was because of the scientific spirit of the older generation who had a patriotic heart that we have enjoyed our stable and happy life. In the future, USTC will continue to create more films and work to inspire young people to contribute to the development of our country.
