On December 16th, the groundbreaking ceremony for Shanghai Science and Education Base of the University of Science and Technology of China (USTC) was grandly held at USTC Shanghai Institute for Advanced Studies. Leaders from USTC, Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) and Shanghai Municipal Committee witnessed this significant moment together.

The ceremony commenced with a passionate speech delivered by Academician BAO Xinhe, President of USTC. In his speech, President BAO Xinhe first expressed gratitude to the long-term support from Anhui Province, Shanghai, Ministry of Science and Technology and CAS. He noted that over the years, the active efforts to establish the USTC Shanghai Science and Education Base have already attracted a large number of top international talents to engage in collaborative innovation. USTC and Shanghai will develop the base under an integrated approach of science-education synergy, aiming to build a key platform for major technological advancements in quantum information.

Next, WU Qiang, Deputy Mayor of Pudong New Area, delivered a speech pointing out that the construction of USTC Shanghai Science and Education Base will effectively promote the integrated development of science, technology, education, and talent in Shanghai. Moreover, he promised that Pudong will continue to provide top-notch services for the base, helping it to grow into a major quantum technology research and industrial hub in China and the world.

Afterwards, Academician PAN Jianwei, President of the Institute of Quantum Information and Quantum Technology Innovation and Executive Vice President of USTC, pointed out in his speech that after years of construction and development, USTC Shanghai Institute for Advanced Studies has become an important platform for USTC to gather high-end intellectual talents and coordinate resources in Shanghai. The new base will make significant contributions to enhancing China’s original innovation capabilities and promoting integrated development in the Yangtze River Delta region.

In the end, SHU Gequn, Secretary of the Party Committee of USTC, announced the start of the construction of USTC Shanghai Science and Education Base (Phase I) project. The attendees jointly laid the foundation for the USTC Shanghai Science and Education Base and took photos to commemorate this moment. Amidst enthusiastic applause from the audience, the groundbreaking ceremony of Shanghai Science and Education Base was successfully completed.
