Elettra Sincrotrone Trieste S.C.p.A., with its Elettra storage ring and FERMI free-electron laser, represents one of the major European facilities for synchrotron radiation application. Elettra storage ring is in operation since 1993, hosting annually more than 1000 users, coming from more than 50 different countries worldwide. In 2008 Elettra was updated with a full energy injector booster for top-up operation and at present a complete update of the original accumulation ring, named Elettra 2.0, is at the conceptual design stage. FERMI is a brand new free-electron laser, which represents the unique FEL worldwide operating in the seeding mode and allowing full control of polarization of the photons produced. Since the beginning of construction of Elettra and more recently with the realization of FERMI, Sincrotrone Trieste has always devoted a particular attention to the cooperation with industry. In this frame a number of projects have been developed in the years for the exploitation of the technologies made available. Specific mention deserves the establishment of Kyma Srl as a spin-off company of Elettra which, after the initial commitment to the realization of all the undulators for FERMI, become a recognized industrial player for the supply of insertion devices to light source facilities worldwide.
