Abstract:
The Danish research group has drilled several ice cores through the Greenland Ice Sheet. The logistics and methods to drill will be presented. From ice cores, it is possible to look into the past and gain knowledge on how the ice sheets reacted to changing climate. This knowledge can be used to improve predictions of sea level rise in the future. The Greenland and Antarctic ice cores tell a story of 26 abrupt climate events during the last glacial period. New results and interpretations of these abrupt climate changes will be presented. The present state of the ice sheets will be discussed and the risk for future abrupt changes will be evaluated.
