Abstract: Nanoparticles can have transformative impact in medicine as vehicles for targeted and controlled drug delivery. This talk will discuss there different applications of nanoparticles in drug discovery. First we will present results to show that liposomes can be designed for sequestration of drugs that are common overdose drugs allowing the possibility of using these formulations as nanomedicine for overdose therapy. Second we will present our work on delivery of ophthalmic drugs via nanobarrier loaded contact lenses to increase bioavailability from 2 % for eye drops to 50%. We will also show how incorporation of nanostructures in the contact lenses can control the drug release. Finally we will discuss novel propofol formulations for anesthesia that are designed to reduce the pain that most patients feel when given intravenous injection. In each of the three cases both in vitro and in vivo results will be presented and there will be focus on understanding the fundamentals in addition to designing the optimal formulations.
