Abstract:The Paul Scherrer Institute (PSI) runs Switzerland's Large-Scale research facilities for users from the domestic and international scientific community, and is one of only two locations in the world providing the three complementary probes of synchrotron and free electron laser X-rays, neutrons and muons at one site. The Swiss Light Source (SLS) at PSI provides photon beams of high brightness for research in condensed matter physics and materials science, as well as biology and chemistry. In this presentation, I will first introduce various synchrotron-based techniques at SLS, ranging from imaging, microscopes, X-ray absorption to diffraction, elastic/inelastic soft X-ray scattering and photoemission spectroscopy. Then, I will present our recent works on direct visualizations of topological quantum states in a topological Kondo insulator candidate and Weyl semimetals by using angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) and its spin-resolved variant (SARPES).
