During The 12th China-Singapore Joint Symposium on Research Frontiers in Physics, the University of Science and Technology of China (USTC) held the“CUSPEA and China Physics”special event in the afternoon on September 22,2016.Attendees reviewed the efforts and achievements made by “CUSPEA” project, encouraging the students to inherit the spirit of studying hard and learning for patriotism through science.
Prof.XU Wu,the party chief of USTC, Prof.DU Jiangfeng, Ye Bangjiao, XU Ning, respectively the executive dean, the party chief and the deputy dean of the School of Physical Sciences of USTC, attended the meeting. Also,Prof.XIE Xincheng, the dean of the school of physics of Peking University, Prof.ZHANG Fuchun from Zhejiang University,Prof.LU Zhengtian from USTC,Prof.WANG Lijun from Tsinghua University,Prof.LIN Haiqing from Beijing Computational Science Research Center,Prof.FENG Yuanping, WANG Jiansheng and WANG Xuesen from National University of Singapore were invited. The meeting was host by Prof.YE Bangjiao.

Prof.XU Wu,the party chief of USTC, opened the ceremony with a warm welcome. He introduced the relationship between the China dream and the brilliant achievements made by USTC in “CUSPEA” project. He said that today was the 90th birthday of Mr Tsung-Dao Lee, this meeting was not only to review the glorious past we had but also to encourage the students to inherit the spirit of studying hard and learning through science and education for patriotism. He also especially reviewed this year on April 26, when President XI Jinping visited USTC and hoped the students in USTC could concentrate to study and serve the motherland and people.

Then, the CUSPEA scholars Academician XIE Xincheng,Prof.LU Zhengtian, WANG Jiansheng and WANG Lijun represented the students to give flowers to four CUSPEA coaches--Prof.ZHANG Yongde, ZHU Dongpei,HU Youqiu and WANG Xiaolian for thankfulness.

Prof.DU Jiangfeng gave a report on“Mr Tsung-Dao Lee,CUSPEA and China Physics”.He reviewed the contribution which made by Mr Tsung-Dao Lee during the establishment and implementation of CUSPEA. In addition, he introduced and reviewed the efforts and achievements made by the teachers and students of USTC in detail. CUSPEA project, he said, under the social background at that time had send so many students to go abroad for further study. On the one hand, it promoted the regularization of domestic undergraduate and graduate education of China, on the other hand, it also helped to foster a large number of talents for China and the world who are still active in every field nowadays. He took USTC for example and proved that under the influence of CUSPEA and other projects, China played a more and more important role in international physics fields. He also showed the Inscription from Mr Tsung-Dao Lee which send to the School of Physical Sciences of USTC and was on behalf of the Chinese physicist to send best wishes to Mr Tsung-Dao Lee for his 90th birthday.

Prof.ZHANG Yongde, one of the CUSPEA coaches in USTC delivered a speech on “unity, struggle, innovation, create brilliant - CUSPEA greeting". He said that not only because of the efforts and hard work of the students but also the responsibility and innovative spirit of all the teachers in USTC, can USTC get such a great progress on CUSPEA project. He described the history of USTC CUSPEA class, recalled the coaching life. Thanks to the emphasis on CUSPEA project and students' efforts at that time, the acceptance rate of USTC was very high. In the end, he summarized the spirit of USTC CUSPEA class is: unity, struggle, innovation, create brilliant.

During the meeting, the scholars and students also made the discussion and interaction about learning skills, doing scientific research and going abroad for further study.
Finally, Prof.XIE Xincheng gave a speech on “Quantum materials: superconductivity and topological states”. Prof.WANG Lijun made a report on “the science and application of Precision Measurement”.

CUSPEA (China-U.S. Physics Examination and Application) was an examination and admission system used by the physics departments of some American and Canadian universities for graduate school admission from People's Republic of China between 1980 and 1989.It was created by the Chinese-American physicist Tsung-Dao Lee and Chinese physics community as an alternative graduate school admission procedure. In ten years, 915 outstanding young students had been sent to go abroad for further study through the examination. Among them, 248 students from USTC passed the exam, accounts for 27% of the total and ranked first in China, and won the individual scoring honors for 6 times.
